Deliver Us from Evil

Cast: Eric Bana, Édgar Ramírez(Priest),Sean Harris(Santino), Olivia Munn(Wife), Joel McHale(Butler), Olivia Horton(Jane)
Director: Scott Derrickson
Genre: Horror, Crime

Takes off pretty well, to end up in a cliche. Yet not a bad watch!

You may look forward to:

  • The first half, where in you see fear coming from wild animals to that of apparent psycopaths to devilish prescence, to team up with thrilling aspect of cops investigating various aspects!
  • Eric Bana plays the lead pretty well suiting the needs
  • Sean Harris keeps up your curiosity for long enough
  • Olivia Munn and Joel McHale, were good supports
  • Olivia Horton is more spooky than the devil himself :)

What you can sleep over:

  • The second half turns out to be like any other horror flick which ends with exorcism of a possessed somebody. There you dont get to see anything captivating enough
  • Édgar Ramírez's role was questionable for a priest, hoping it actually were close to any real character :) The funny part was when he himself was carried away during exorcism :)

The dampeners you should be aware of:

Somehow the entire act of exorcism, however detailed, looked slightly on the funny side than horrifying :D

My Rating: 3/5 (For the first half)
            2/5 (For the second half)

A Walk Among the Tombstones

Cast: Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens(Kenny), Sebastian Roché(Yuri), David Harbour(Ray), Adam David Thompson(Albert) and Brian Bradley(TJ)
Director: Scott Frank
Genre: Crime, Thriller

Quite a watch, a dark one though! Lian Neeson keeps up with his genre of movies and delivers another good one

You may look forward to:

  • The USP of the movie lies in its thriller aspect, it manages to get your attention. To an extent gory but not over the top completely red. This movie even after being executed slow, grips up until the very end
  • Scott Frank deserves the appreciation for making this an interesting watch
  • Liam Neeson at his regular best, he best suits genres like this
  • David Harbour and Adam David Thompson, were quite a dark pair villains together, the one without loyalty even to each other. They if real, has the potential to get into your nerves, man and woman alike
  • Brian Bradley has productive and supportive role :) He began with an unnecessary presence but makes it up by the end
  • Dan Stevens and Sebastian Roché were in good parallel roles, the victims who were as well active and not merely riding on detective to do all the job :)

What you can sleep over:

  • Unnecessary angle of 'Kenny's' brother, has nothing much to do with the whole of the story
  • Also one of the leads jumping off the building for no apparent threat

The dampeners you should be aware of:

Irritating presence of Brian Bradley in the first half, also partly in the second half. Feels like forced upon drama of his sickness, blah blah! They could have written something a bit more interesting for him

Khoobsurat

Cast: Sonam Kapoor,Fawad Khan,Kirron Kher,Ratna Pathak and Aamir Raza Hussain
Director: Shashanka Ghosh
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Drama

Entertaining but exaggerated projection! Go for a light hearted laughter!

You may look forward to:

  • Sonam Kapoor did pretty well, which shouldn't be a wonder as its daddy's picture, got her a meaty role. She is bubbly, pretty and seen in all sort of costumes, sports to whacky
  • Fawad Khan is a fresh addition, doesn't feel like a starter in big full fledged movies. He looks hot and suave throughout, fresh acting a fresh face but may be suitable only for selective roles
  • Kirron Kher is so adorable, especially in the second half, she gets you rolling in laughter
  • Ratna Pathak reminds you her role in the famous comedy TV Series she used to play earlier. Serious and demanding but otherwise not a vamp! She suits in the role :)
  • Aamir Raza Hussain had a decent role in shaping up the story
  • The USP of the movie is the humor, it does live up to the comedy and romance angle of it

What you can sleep over:

Music is very okayish, in the context of the movie is fine but otherwise a little too loud and noisy

The dampeners you should be aware of:

  • Exaggerated presentation of things, everything was over the top! Difficult relating to any true probable character in real life
  • Absolutely no hot scene, not even the much needed kiss :D

My Rating: 3.5/5

The Maze Runner

Cast: Dylan O'Brien,Ki Hong Lee(Min-Ho),Will Poulter(Gally), Aml Ameen(Alby),Thomas Brodie-Sangster(Newt), Blake Cooper(Chuck) and Kaya Scodelario(Teresa)
Director:  Wes Ball
Genre: Sci-Fi, Action, Thriller

Cliche, cliche and cliche, that would define 'The Maze Runner'. One time watch nevertheless

You may look forward to:

  • Initial excitement before it stars getting stale
  • All the actors, everybody did a good job, but nothing extra ordinary differentiating one from the other

What you can sleep over:

Same old cliche Sci-Fi crap, same old deadly creatures, old manner of rebellions, no extra ordinary cinematography

The dampeners you should be aware of:

There are no outright dampeners, but there is nothing exciting about it either

My Rating: 2.5/5

Daawat-e-Ishq

Cast: Aditya Roy Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, Anupam Kher
Director:  Habib Faisal
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance

Watch it for food and Aditya Roy Kapoor :) Everything else is pretty much trash!

You may look forward to:
  • Aditya Roy Kapoor, now proves with this that he can act beyond alcohol :) This time no drinking, but eateries :P Nonetheless, he is a charmer, very jovial and a character full of life. He is romantic, is as well cheerful through out, in contrast with how we have seen him on screen uptil now :)
  • Make sure you eat well before watching it :) Specially for non veggies :) Amazing mouth watering food throughout the movie!
  • Music was good to watch on Big Screens

What you can sleep over:
  • Parineeti Chopra is about Okayish in the movie, she doesn't look her bubbly self, nor does she have a role which catches your attention really!
  • I feel Anupam Kher was wasted in this movie. For a father's role who is what they show he is, is not digestible to me, on how he transforms suddenly and every time

The dampeners you should be aware of:
  • The story of the movie feels like an idiot's ride, based on a female's wish which keeps changing every now and then without any clear basis and to top it, being backed by a father who dances to all her tunes without complaining
  • The romance between the leads was missing largely, it always felt one sided, and what is a romantic movie minus romance

My Rating: 2.5/5 (Only for Aditya and yumm food)

Finding Fanny

Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Pankaj Kapur, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor, Anjali Patil and Ranveer Singh
Director: Homi Adajania
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance

Doesn't live up to the expectation. However, a fresh watch!

You may look forward to:

  • The movie is so watchable for these three characters: Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia and Pankaj Kapur. Though the movie is promoted in the name of Deepika Padukone. But the true stars were the older and experienced actors
  • Naseeruddin Shah is such a wonderful actor. This guy is actually so adorable in the movie. Each and every expression, so meticulous and so natural, flawless
  • Dimple Kapadia has a splendid role in this one. She is like ' The woman' of the movie. Not just the actors in 20's and 30's, but also the last generation actors apply a lot of effort in their bodies to look as per the character. Her body was the USP of the movie after all! :) Rosy is a lady tough from outside but a lovable lady inside, with sentiments :) Beautifully played
  • Pankaj Kapur was hilarious. His sudden upturn in the character in the second half was shocking. He is a role with deceptive features. Not every individual whose life seem simple, mean uncomplicated character at heart. People can be good or bad in any situation!
  • Ranveer Singh had a very short cameo with no dialogue. He looked like a darling :)
  • Anjali Patil has a short supporting role playing the role behind the name 'Fanny'

What you can sleep over:

  • Backdrop of Goa, same old streets seen in multiple movies, and one or two new roads. 50% of Indians must have been in those places in Goa. No additional charm that they added, say to depict the local culture of Goa, or anything beyond roads
  • As rightly put by an RJ on the radio, this movie is a poor man's 'Zindagi na milegi dobara' :D
  • The movie was meant to be a comedy in chaos with romance. We had our own share of humor in the film, but it doesn't stand up to be as quirky sense of humor, as it should have been
  • Deepika Padukone looked really fresh as daisy throughout, even though she toned down her assets to the extent where in it stopped mattering she is shirtless or she is not :P But alas! apart from looking a daisy, she had nothing more to offer
  • Arjun Kapoor acted like a douchebag half the time, and a huge piece of flab walking around. He somehow looks unshaped bulk of mass. His role wasn't any significant either, but he had a presence that completed the picture of the entire cast

The dampeners you should be aware of:

  • The movie is released both in Hindi and English, however the one in Hindi is just a dubbed version, with no lip sync, which makes the experience a blunder. I chose to watch it in Hindi, thinking English wont exactly fit in, later only to my despair that English would have been a better choice
  • The story in the second half dragged a lot, specially the scenes involving Deepika and Arjun

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Cast: Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Eva Green,Josh Brolin,Powers Boothe,Joseph Gordon-Levitt,Rosario Dawson, Dennis Haysbert, Jamie Chung and Bruce Willis
Director: Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez
Genre: Crime, Thriller

I do not enjoy forced upon dark movies like this. A let down!

You may look forward to:

  • Cinematography....beautifully shot in Black and White wide screens. 3D look good. Certain splash of colors in between looked good too
  • Jessica Alba, is one chic, every man should hit theaters for :) All she does is to dance seductively throughout, a wild cat :)
  • Eva Green, plays a perfect bitch. Her charm, her seduction and deception, as well as her folly...she does it all so well
  • I personally liked the character of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, poker genius with all confidence
  • Josh Brolin, has a catchy and a grayish side of his role, he was mostly played upon, yet a semi heroic character :)
  • Rosario Dawson and Dennis Haysbert had good supports

What you can sleep over:

  • Mickey Rourke, has a tough role but the script doesn't leave much for him to do
  • Powers Boothe, same story. Blame the script
  • Bruce Willis, a cameo

The dampeners you should be aware of:

  • The story was such a lame. Half baked story, undone roles, it doesn't help pick up good focus in the movie
  • Action was just so unreal and like comic books. Gory content weren't gory, action sequences were nothing but cutting and slashing, age old, super boring techniques, which were mostly played by Jamie Chung and partly by others
  • Jessica Alba, hot but wasted. Her final big kill was also purely out of chance and no heroism. She was better off in Fantastic Four :D
  • Frank Miller certainly doesn't live up to the set expectations

My Rating: 2/5

Mary Kom

Cast: Priyanka Chopra,Sunil Thapa, Darshan Kumaar
Director: Omung Kumar
Genre: Biography, Sport

Hats off to Priyanka Chopra, this movie belongs to her. And salute Mary Kom! :)

You may look forward to:

  • Now this is one i am seriously impressed. I have seen Bollywood actresses doing action, playing retarded, etc etc. But seen none who did a serious make over of herself in terms of body toning and Boxing stunts. Priyanka Chopra stands out. Yes, she no where looks any close to Mary Kom, but well, could any other selection looking close to Mary Kom have given so much to the movie as she has! Doubtful, unsure!
  • I don't care if she looks close enough to the real character or not, i even don't mind that the movie didn't cover a lot of essential aspects from the life of Mary Kom, her personality build up or childhood etc. But where Omung Kumar stands out are the scenes never before shown by a woman which belongs to the actual act behind the woman in making. The scenes from the boxing ring and her preparation to a boxer are indeed very well shot, even one can always debate, that this is not how one boxes or that is wrong. Its all right. Its a movie and clearly an entertainer. It was never built for a documentary
  • Darshan Kumaar playing Mary Kom's husband, is one ideal role every man should learn from :) Thats how a family is built. An ardent supporter and lover
  • Sunil Thapa as the coach, does a decent job and he has some good dialogues in there to deliver :)
  • The music look good on big screens

What you can sleep over:

Yes, there are lot of scenes which feels over the top filmy, but nevertheless, it does manage to raise your heart beat :)

The dampeners you should be aware of:

A little better utilization of time to cover half the life of a person, could be better appreciated. It is understood, that it isn't an easy job, but there have been many successful biographies which do not give you a feel that something went missing or half baked

Media Verdict: It is quite wrong to compare this movie with Milkha Singh. They are two different stories, yes connected with sports. But the truth is, Milkha Singh picked up more for Farhan Akhtar's six packs than his running abilities. Well, if Priyanka would flaunt her abs and legs, i guess she would as well get the desired attention from media :) Unfair of media not to appreciate a female actress for bold and tough roles like this. Without due motivation, Bollywood can never successfully make positions for the heroines like those in Hollywood

Hats off to Mary Kom, for doing something which most women wont dare to. A successful come back after being into motherhood. Thats not something any male sportsman can even imagine to endure. It is horrendously wrong to compare a sportswoman to a sportsman. Nevertheless, appreciate both!

The November Man

Cast: Pierce Brosnan, Luke Bracey(David), Olga Kurylenko(Alice), Bill Smitrovich (John)
Director: Roger Donaldson
Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller

Regular spy thriller, a good pass time

You may look forward to:

  • Pierce Brosnan playing the character of otherwise known 'The November Man'. Age is definitely not a bar in Hollywood :) He does a splendid job
  • Luke Bracey, co star or second fiddle, call him whatever, but he delivered to what was expected pretty well
  • Olga Kurylenko had a decent role with meaty substance, well wrapped and well played :)
  • Bill Smitrovich, again a villain long under the wrap, executed fine

What you can sleep over:

Action sequences weren't any worth remembering

The dampeners you should be aware of:

Low key plot, when you involve such big names in a conspiracy story, the villain is ought to be far more powerful. Climax felt like a piece of cake

My Rating: 2.5/5

Step Up All In

Cast: Ryan Guzman, Briana Evigan, Misha Gabriel, Adam G. Sevani, Alyson Stoner(Camellie),Izabella Miko(Alexa),Mari Koda(Jenny),The Santiago Twins
Director: Trish Sie
Genre: Dance, Music

Doesn't live up to the expectations. Nevertheless, the final competition is all the movie is worth about

You may look forward to:

  • The final dance sequence, as usual have been the best in its series. The final dance is more of a celebration than a competition in more real sense, nonetheless, you get all that in one shot for which you waited for all along the length of the movie
  • Adam G. Sevani and Alyson Stoner had beautiful chemistry. And 'Moose' is evergreen :)
  • Izabella Miko and her screen presence reminds you a lot of 'Hunger Games', her costumes, her acting were all over done and loud, BUT, gorgeous :) She is a lot evil and wild, and that she plays amazingly well
  • Mari Koda and The Santiago Twins, well known dancers from the series, were there usual best
  • All the other dancers from the series and the new ones, clap clap to all of em! They are all just fab dancers!
  • This movie was fun watching in 3D :)

What you can sleep over:

  • Ryan Guzman and Briana Evigan, did much better jobs in the series they performed earlier, this was one was rather disheartening. And these guys were fighting more than half of the movie, do not make an awesome couple much to my disappointment
  • Misha Gabriel, had a weird disconnect, it wasn't certainly amazing

The dampeners you should be aware of:

The biggest dampener of the movie is its poor storyline with practically no good moves! What makes Step Series so watchable even after it being completely into and only freestyle dancing, are the presentations. The innovative stages, formations and styling. That makes Step Up for what it is. Barring the final set up, everything else practically sucks, very very non enchanting

Raja Natwarlal

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Humaima Malick, Paresh Rawal,Kay Kay Menon,Deepak Tijori
Director: Kunal Deshmukh
Genre: Crime, Thriller

Witty enjoyable thriller built on cliche plot! This one do not fail in entertaining you

You may look forward to:

  • Emraan Hashmi, undisputed hero of the film :) Catchy dialogues, Emraan's branded kiss, clothes, attitude, music. You have them all :)
  • The story of the movie looked very much cliche and predictable, but thankfully they reaped it in the climax. Good work by Kunal Deshmukh as well the writers of the movie
  • Paresh Rawal was one of the key person of the plot, without him perhaps it wouldn't be as much fun
  • Humaima Malick for a debutant, does a good job. She doesnt fumble while acting. She has a better role than what Kareena Kapoor bags for ridiculous price
  • Kay Kay Menon was a darling, he tried hard to be rough but is extremely adorable in this one and the way he is been played :D
  • Deepak Tijori, after a long time, had a very fresh and graceful screen presence
  • The songs were nice, not all of em but a particular few romantic numbers. Arijit Singh at his usual best
  • Cape Town looked beautiful on big screens :)

What you can sleep over:

Humaima Malick's appearance. Poor lady, pathetic costumes! And there is something wrong with her face even though she's got very commendable facial cut, somehow she doesn't look appealing

The dampeners you should be aware of:

No notable dampeners as such, a few nitty gritty misses apart

My Rating: 3.5/5

The Expendables 3

Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li,Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren(Gunner),Kellan Lutz(John), Ronda Rousey(Luna), Glen Powell(Thorn), Victor Ortiz(Mars), Mel Gibson,Harrison Ford(Max Drummer), Arnold Schwarzenegger
Director: Patrick Hughes
Genre: Action, Thriller

If guns and bullets is all you seek, Expendables is the movie. Its very tricky to judge a movie like this which delivers nothing but raw action only in every series :)

You may look forward to:

  • Yes, it is a hard core action flick. You never fall short of it. Enough bullets and enough bombings. And you have a few different units in this one, the team 'Expendables' has only grown in number
  • Sylvester Stallone as the leader of the teams, and working them out
  • Jason Statham, Jet Li,Wesley Snipes and Dolph Lundgren, men from the old unit, divided screen presence, yet job well done
  • Kellan Lutz, Glen Powell, Victor Ortiz and this time also a lady addition-Ronda Rousey, form the new crew, bunch of youngsters and young blooded moves
  • Mel Gibson is damn hot in the movie. This one guy doesn't look any old, he is a clean winner in the film. Loved this villain more than any other hero :)
  • Harrison Ford and Arnold Schwarzenegger were short but good supports
  • Music is slowly becoming a part of Hollywood :) 'Come with me now' by Kongos, very well placed and is an absolutely smasher :)

What you can sleep over:

Story is very much usual as you have the villain as a comeback, same cliche threats and same story

The dampeners you should be aware of:

This can be disappointing to the audience, that they do not come with any extraordinary stunts or never seen before tricks. Nor any heavy/new machinery in use

My Rating: 3/5
